1-3 A. T. Still, M.D. was the founder of osteopathy. His books are written with quirky 1800s prose but are extremely profound. He discusses principles rather than techniques. One cannot understand nor perform effective Osteopathy without understanding these principles. His three books cover the principles he thought pertinent. He started a school of Osteopathy, an Osteopathic hospital and an entirely novel medical philosophy. “My object is to make the Osteopath a philosopher, and place him on the rock of reas0n. Then I will not have to worry of writing details of how to treat any organ of the body, because he is qualified to the degree of knowing what has produced the variation of all kinds in form and function”. A.T. Still, M.D. People came from around the world to Kirksville, Missouri where he resided, as he and his students were so effective with Osteopathic treatments.

4. From the Dry Bone to the Living Man. An extraordinary autobiography of A. T. Still describing his life and the evolution of his osteopathic philosophy.

5-7 Fred Mitchell, D.O. was an amazing osteopath. I took classes with his son and am still impressed and haven’t seen similar results yet. Muscle energy techniques are potent and impressive.

8-9 John Upledger opened much of Osteopathic manipulation education to the American lay public. Solid principles and techniques.

8-23 Lots of titles about working on the head and brain and the function of the cerebrospinal fluid.

11-12 William Garner Sutherland was a giant in the field of craniosacral osteopathy. Must reads.

11. Sutherland’s life written by his wife.

22 James Jealous taught many classes on Sutherland’s work until his death in 2022. He deeply explores the energetic and spiritual aspects of osteopathic healing. This book is about the stages of comprehension of craniosacral concepts by Dr. Sutherland, likely to be experienced by subsequent craniosacral students try to go as deeply into the topic.

24-27 Lots about lymphatics

28-32 Early osteopaths trained by Dr. Still. Classic concepts and techniques.

33 Dr. Fulford was famous for outstanding outcomes and his access to the energetic/esoteric aspects of healing. He used the phrase “liquid light” applying to his treatments. His discussion of his philosophy.

34 A Dallas Osteopath and world=wide lecturer, Dr. Speece was a direct student of Rollin Becker who was a student of Sutherland. Becker started the Dallas Osteopathic Study Group meeting monthly since the 1960’s. It is now held at Dr. Speece’s office. I attended for years until the 4 1/2 one way drive proved to be too much.

35-54 Lots of topics by modern Ostepaths

39 Emanuel Swedenborg 1688-1772 was a genius with a very wide area of interests. Many of his ideas are very osteopathic.

41 Stillness allows listening to healing on a profound scale. A foundational skill to develop for healing.

43 Dr. Gintis discusses Continuum Movement and its relationship with Osteopathy.

44 Dermo Neuro Modulating discusses how interacting with very peripheral nerves in the skin can affect many functions.

49-54 European Osteopaths - very good books

1Dr. Rolf’s book on her work. She purposefully wrote the book in a way only Rolfers could understand. The pictures are very articulate.

2 Quotes by Ida Rolf that shows a great of her far reaching brilliant mind. These perspectives are a great aid in understanding what she developed - Rolfing Structural Integration.

3 This book of testimonials by Rolf clients shows the scope of Rolfing transformations.

4 Very accurate description of the Rolfing 10 series process by a very skilled Rolfer. Betsy Sise was on my interview committee when I applied to the Rolf Institute. I was so eager I bounded into the room and hit my head on the door frame (I’m 6’5”). I had a slight concussion and answered their questions monosyllabically. She watched me for a while and eventually touched my back lightly and my thinking cleared immediately. I realized I had a lot to learn.

5 Stories about Ida Rolf by her early students. She was born at the end of Victorian times and taught people from the hippy generation in the 60s and 70s. Becoming as competent as Ida Rolf takes many years. This book explains a lot about how Rolfing culture developed.

6 How fascia functions from a Rolfing perspective.

7 Rolfing considerations for the pelvis, a cornerstone of upright posture. Louis Schultz was an anatomy professor and one of Ida Rolf original students and teachers.

8-9 Rolfing improves coordination. It is wise to explore the new movement possibilities with Mary Bond’s excellent perspectives.

10-12 Ed Maupin was an original student and a faculty member. He started his own school of Structural Integration. His three books explain the technical abstractions of Rolfing.

13 Joseph Heller was another original who started his own school.

14-15 Ritchie Mintz trained to become a Rolfer in 1978, just missing Ida Rolf. He is a very good Rolfer, has won national contests with his banjo, has been a pilot, is a masterful martial artist, is a Rolf instructor and has a very unique perspective on Rolfing, which is the topic of his two books.

17 This book from the 1930s has lots of ideas that Ida Rolf incorporated.

18-34 Many perspectives on Rolfing by very accomplished, highly experienced Rolfers.

25-31 These are not books on Rolfing but discuss anatomy and movement in ways that are very consistent with Rolfing perspectives. Kapandji’s and Caillet’s books are masterful.

Dr. Vasant Lad is a world renowned Ayurvedic physician who has been instrumental in bringing Ayurveda to the United States. He operates the Ayurveda Institute, now in Asheville, N.C. The Institute has a clinic and panchakarma treatments, yoga instruction, publication department and a school for Ayurveda. There are 1, 2 and 3 year courses of instruction.

1-3 Dr. Lad’s textbooks for his certification classes. Clear and concise. Needs multiple readings as there is so much to comprehend.

4 Ayurveda clinicians examine the radial pulses and gather a wealth of clinical information.

6 Marma points are the same concept as acupressure points.

7 Dr. Lad wrote a book for the general public.

8-9 Robert Svoboda was the 1st westerner admitted to an Ayurvedic school in India. He was valedictorian of his class. Prakriti refers to our most basic constitution that is the basis for our health. I think it is the most understandable of the introductory books listed here (7,8,9,11,13,14). He has written many books.

10-13 David Frawley is an Ayurvedic scholar and a prolific author about Ayurveda. He has received an award from the Indian government for his contributions. Ayurveda and the Mind is masterful. Not an easy read initially as the ideas are foreign to western thinking.

14 Tongue diagnosis is a major diagnostic tool in Ayurveda clinical medicine. It is another example of how parts relate to other body parts.

15-16 Basic overviews of Ayurveda

1 The most basic level of connective tissue. Metabolically busy and from this foundational organization stems all other tissue organization.

2 Tensegrity is how upright posture is possible. But it is also the principle in another type of structural organization upon which all tissue depends.

3 A classic book describing how chronic stress remodels connective tissue. This keeps Rolfers busy.

4-7 Histology of fascia

8-12 Clinical considerations regarding fascia

1-2 1st year medical student embryology textbooks.

3-5 Atlases of embryology. Jirasek’s book has astonishing pictures.

6-7 Blechschmidt revolutionized embryological thinking and gave rise to the biodynamic concept. His ideas work well with Osteopathy and lead to effective treatment outcomes.

1-4 Dr. Tubiana’s series is very complete. Volume 1 discusses normal anatomy and movement in great detail. Volumes 2-4 discuss trauma and pathologies and the surgical treatment of such.

5 Infections of the hand by Kanavel is a classic of hand surgery. Infections often spread along fascial planes and this book discusses in detail the hand anatomy and the resulting syndromes that can occur.

6-9 These four books discuss theories of the evolution of the human hand and the evolution of the brain that accompanied our unique hands. Bell’s book was written in 1832.

Neurology

1-8 Basic neurological science

9-19 More clinical concepts

17 Quite an anatomically busy 2 cubic centimeters. An Osteopathic wonderland.
